Stuart was incorporated as a town in 1914 and chartered as a city in 1925, the same year it became the seat of the newly created Martin County — carved that year from the northern part of Palm Beach County and the southern part of St. Lucie County, and named for John W. Martin, Florida's governor at the time. In 1957 the city formally adopted the nickname "Sailfish Capital of the World," in recognition of the abundance of sailfish in the waters offshore — a designation that has stuck ever since and one we're happy to explain to anyone who asks. The North and South Forks of the St. Lucie River converge near downtown Stuart, forming the St. Lucie Estuary before connecting to the Indian River Lagoon and reaching the Atlantic through the St. Lucie Inlet — a waterway system that runs right through the middle of the community we deliver in every day.
Downtown Stuart's historic core sits along Flagler Avenue and Osceola Street, with buildings dating back to the 1880s and 1890s built up around the city's first railroad stop, and a Riverwalk boardwalk runs behind downtown along the river with dolphin, fish and oyster viewing. Stuart also carries a genuine marine and boating industry presence — it's home to the long-running Stuart Boat Show, run by the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, alongside numerous marinas and a yacht club — the kind of waterfront community where a dumpster order might sit next to a boat trailer as often as a car.
As of the 2020 Census, Stuart counted 17,425 residents, inside a Martin County of 158,431 — a 2025 Census Bureau estimate, not a fresh headcount, puts the county figure higher, at 166,272. Growth here has stayed genuinely modest rather than explosive — county officials reported roughly 1.23% growth in 2024, consistent with several years running under 2% annually. On the storm side, Stuart and Martin County have real, well-documented hurricane history: Hurricane Frances made a direct landfall near Stuart in September 2004, followed just 21 days later by Hurricane Jeanne, which made landfall at peak intensity on the southern end of Hutchinson Island, also near Stuart. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 brought coastal erosion impacts to the area rather than a Florida landfall. It's exactly the kind of storm history that keeps hurricane-season prep and post-storm debris cleanup a regular part of what we do.
